Product Description

Size: 40 x 40 cm

The Hmong did not have any previous written language until thirty-five years ago when Christian missionaries standardized and romanized the Hmong language. Previously, all of their communication was oral and/or pictorial. Many of the oral history traditions have been transcribed pictorially on a story cloth known as a pa’ndau. The pa’ndau, composed of applique, cross-stitches, batik and embroidery, incorporates Hmong personal family history, village life, the death and disturbances of war and emigration, and life in a new land.

Lifescenes depict the everyday village life of thousands of Hmong and Lao people. Each Lifescene portrait is a unique original - no two are alike! The artist stitches a unique scene and story on each individual work. There are no patterns as Lifescenes are based on life experiences and events of the artist. Artisans will stitch such scenes as typical village homes, feeding animals, and planting and harvesting rice.

All cross-stitch and embroidered lifescenes are sewn with colorfast, washable products. In order to increase the longevity of the embroidery we recommend handwashing each article. Do not wring. Lay flat to dry so that the shape is not distorted. If the cloth is wrinkled after drying, iron the wrong side but not the side displaying the embroidery.
