Fair Trade 101

When you first start to read about fair trade, the various governing bodies and labelling systems can be overwhelming and confusing. Here, we attempt to provide you with some clear information to help you learn more about fair trade and to make ethical choices.

Fair Trade Labels

There are two main international bodies that govern fair trade labelling:

  • World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO)
  • FLO International (also known as Fairtrade International)

The main difference between the two is that FLO International certifies products (such as coffee, cotton etc.) whereas WFTO certifies organisations (such as handcraft producers).

Fair Trade in Australia

The Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand supports both FLO International and WFTO. Furthermore, it endorses businesses that have fair trade at the heart of what they do as Fair Traders of Australia. We have been endorsed as a Fair Trader of Australia.
