Hindu devotees dry their clothes after a holy dip at the confluence of the river Ganges and the sea - their brilliant saffron robes are associated with sacrifice, the renunciation of worldly goods, and religious dedication. Each year more than a million Hindu pilgrims descend on Sagar Island for the Gangasagar Mela festival. It is one of the major income-generating activities of the island, but sadly in recent years the water quality has become degraded by organic pollutants such as human waste, with worrying implications for public health. A thorough environmental assessment has been called to ensure the suitability of the coastal zone - and the festival - well into the future.
