'Art for Life' - Pushkar, India
Size: B6 (160 x 118 mm)
Material: 100% recycled paper
Women paint traditional designs on a wall in Pushkar, Rajasthan. Though traditional art and crafts can be important parts of village economies, the predominantly female painters have little power to negotiate a fair price for their work. A social enterprise called Banglanatak ('Contact Base') is working to change this. Operating on the belief that developing rural cultural industries will drive socio-economic empowerment, Banglanatak's 'Art for Life' project helps Indian women and girls turn their traditional folk art skills into a sustainable livelihood. Working with 5000 folk dancers, singers, musicians and painters since 2005, Banglanatak reports that the project increases household income, generates greater confidence among the participants in their skills as artisans, and releases women from their dependence on intermediaries to sell and market their art. The purchase of this People & Planet greeting card has supported the organisation's valuable work with Indian women and girls.
