Oz Fair Trade

Mission Statements

1. Fighting Poverty through Fair Trade

During my trips to the world's poorest countries, I witnessed much suffering. But I also saw amazing handicrafts that I absolutely adored! After extensive research and soul searching, I came to the conclusion that fair trade is a viable solution to poverty alleviation. Read more about fair trade here.

2. Empowering the Privileged to Empower the Poor

Who holds the ultimate power to change the world? I believe that every consumer holds that power and that every purchase of fair trade products makes life better for the people living in poverty. I have met talented artisans who were forced to work in sweatshops for less than $2 a day. Your purchases help these people to take control of their lives, and to provide a better future for their children.

 3. Delivering Happiness through WOW Service

I want to wow you :) As a small business, I can provide personalised and exceptional customer services, and I take great pride in making my customers happy. I understand that online shopping can be a daunting process, and I want to make that process as enjoyable as possible. My focus is not only on the quality of the products but also on the quality of the service. I offer you one of the best shipping and return policies in the online world. I also offer a unique and generous VIP program. If you have any feedback on my service, I’d love to hear from you!

 4. Promoting Fair Trade and Ethical Fashion Movements

I take an active role in promoting the principles of fair trade and ethical fashion. They both allow consumers to be 100% confident that the items that they purchased are not produced through exploitation. Compared to fair trade, ethical fashion is a recent movement that focuses on ethical practices of the fashion industry, and it increased momentum after the horrific Bangladesh factory collapse. It is encouraging to see more fashion companies and designers taking more responsibilities and making their supply chains more ethical.

5. Preserving and Promoting Cultural Heritage

While the development of large scale manufacturing improves efficiency and productivity, it has threatened the survival of traditional handcraft techniques. The craft of hand weaving, hand embroidery etc. have been passed down from generation to generation among many minority ethnic groups, with each group having their own distinct designs and motifs. I am totally in love with these products, which carry a quality that is unmatched by any machine-produced goods. It will be a real pity to see these skills becoming distinct. Therefore, I work with producers to preserving their cultural heritage.

 6. Building a Better World through Collaboration

No individual alone can make the world a better place. But together, we can all contribute to that goal. I build long-term relationships with a number of fair trade producer groups so that they have sustainable income that they can count on. This allows them to build up their fair trade businesses, improve living standards and provide education to their children. I build long-term relationships with my customers so that together we can fight poverty through fair trade.

 7. Helping More Artisans to Live a Dignified Life

No one wants to beg if he/she can earn a sustainable income. Over and over again, people in developing countries have expressed their preferences for jobs over handouts. I believe that dignity is the most basic need of a human being, and fair trade gives the world's most disadvantaged people a chance to live a dignified life.

 8. Teaching Our Children the Humble and the Imperfect

I believe that buying handicrafts show our children that not everything in this world needs to be mass produced. It teaches them to love and appreciate the unique and the imperfect and it inspires them to do their own creating as well.

 9. Respecting Mother Earth

I encourage my artisan partners to employ sustainable practices and to use recycled and natural materials when possible. Most of my products are produced in the most environmentally friendly way possible – by hand. Many artisans recycle materials such as newspaper, magazines, bombshells and glass to create innovative and functional products. I strive to minimise our carbon footprint while maximising our impact on disadvantaged artisans. This e-commerce website serves as an environmental alternative to a print catalogue.

 10. Encouraging Innovation

I source products that are both beautiful and functional. I encourage fair trade producers to make innovative designs that are better suited to a modern world, and I provide design support to some small-scale fair trade producers.  I believe that innovation is crucial to the future development of fair trade.

Compared to Fair Trade, which has been evolving and improving for the past 80 years, Ethical Fashion is a recent movement focused on ethical practices of the fashion industry.
